Bus system

System in which data and/or messages are exchanged sequentially (DIN 19 237).

Within a computer the individual assemblies (processor, data and program memory and input-output units) are connected together by the address bus, the data bus and the control bus.

The number of items of information that can be transferred in parallel is a measure of the performance of a bus system. Primarily there are e.g. 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit buses; fieldbus.
