If mineral oil that contains air bubbles is compressed very quickly, the bubbles are heated so quickly that even self-ignition of the air-gas mixture can occur. As a consequence a very large increase in pressure and temperature occurs locally that can also damage seals as well as cause accelerated ageing of the oil.
