Wind turbines rely on a stable hydraulic system to keep blades positioned correctly and to stop safely when required. Accumulators act as:

• Energy storage units: They store pressurized hydraulic fluid for fast, high‑force movements.
• Safety devices: In case of power loss, the accumulator ensures immediate brake activation or pitch‑to‑feather.
• System stabilizers: They smooth out pressure fluctuations and prolong the life of other hydraulic components.

In short: if the accumulator fails, key turbine functions are at risk.

Piston Accumulators:

• Suitable for high pressure
• Suitable for large volume
• Low permeability
• No bladder to fail, but requires clean hydraulic fluid
• Used in low temperature environment

Diaphragm Accumulators:

• Fast dynamic response
• Compact, small-volume applications
• Cost efficient/Low cost
• Used in low temperature environment

Bladder Accumulators:

• Fast dynamic response
• Ideal for pitch systems
• Simple maintenance, but bladder wear is common
