Computer subsystem that undertakes the mathematical operations of a digital system. The ALU is the "heart" of the microprocessor. It operates between the registers and the control unit. For this purpose it is able to undertake arithmetic operations as well as to implement boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT etc.).
